welcome back 642 new this morning
chronic sinusitis has affects 50 million
people every year and if you're one of
them you know it can make it difficult
to breathe it can also lead to severe
headaches and while some people get
traditional sinusitis surgery for relief
others are opting for a gentler
alternative that's done in the office I
would go like and get different
medications from floor days maybe
over-the-counter saline spray that would
give me some temporary relief but then
it'll come back like with a vengeance so
Kim Brown went to the doctor and told
her about her sinus issues and the
constant headaches that come with them
she was told she has chronic sinusitis
were narrowing of the natural drainage
openings of the sinuses caused them to
trap mucus and infection bothers me 24/7
for the most part yes I'll wake people I
wake up typically when I go to the
bathroom at the night you know my nose
really dry I'm struggling you know to
breathe so the doctor referred her to
ear nose and throat physician dr.
Michael stone he told her about balloon
sinuplasty and she decided to have it
done it's a newer procedure more
minimally invasive for people who suffer
from chronic sinus infections chronic
facial pain and pressure as opposed to
going to the operating room and having
traditional sinus surgery it opens the
natural sinus openings using a tiny
balloon so this is the actual balloon
that dilates the openings of the sinuses
the tip of the probe right here goes
into the sinus it's a 20-minute
procedure done in the office with the
light oral sedation most people are able
to go back within one to two days
sometimes a little longer three or four
days John Paris had the procedure done
five weeks ago fantastic I can breathe
so much better I can breathe out both
sides of my nose I sleep with my mouth
closed studies have been done that show
from several years out that the sinuses
remain open and that patients are set
are completely satisfied yeah you can
hear from the patient there particularly
who said that it really allows them to
sleep more sleep better and you know not
have to skip work and dr. stone of ear
nose and throat consultants says that
balloon sinuplasty has been around for
ten years we're told most insurances
cover
it has about a 75% success rate about
the same as traditional hospital-based
sinuplasty and of course living here in
michigan we all know about allergies too
and that's something that really can
make things worse
