hi I've been recently writing an
editorial about great ideas for running
strategic planning facilitated workshops
and there's been probably six things
that come across my desk that really do
trip workshops up especially when
they're run by the leaders of an
organization so I'm going to quickly run
through some things to avoid as you
might consider running your sessions or
seeking some help the first one is don't
make it too vague
let's not have grand planning let's have
we want to achieve this particular
outcome sustainability new market
entrants merges or joint ventures or
alliances second thing to be really
focused on is please throw away the
PowerPoint slides and presentations talk
to the team give them preparatory
material but don't have them sitting for
one minute just listening apart from the
obvious introduction session the third
thing is do give them a lot of
preparation material do give them the
material to read before so that when
they're together they collaborate they
work to problem-solve they really get
that team dynamic going think about it
this way if you want them away together
for a day give them another day to
prepare for that session fourth thing is
really think about whether you're going
to facilitate the session as the leader
as the leader you want to participate
and sometimes as the facilitator you
won't get the ability to do both the
other thing to think about is if you're
facilitating sometimes the team will
just follow you through a process rather
than challenge id8
work with you same goes for the scribe
this is the fifth common fall the scribe
needs to be a dedicated person that can
just right pull it together as a story
at the end and distribute it that's
often hard to do if they're one of the
participants finally energy make sure
that the people are moving from the
beginning when they arrive through
syndicates and other sort of movement
based activities make sure that these
workshops are really about moving the
body as much about moving the ideas in
the mind look here are six things that
may help you to drive a better strategic
planning workshop this year
