How to Dye with Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye

Gather Supplies
Supplies include Rit All-Purpose Dye for cotton, linen, rayon, silk, wool and nylon.
If dyeing acrylic, acetate or fabrics with 35% polyester or more, use Rit DyeMore instead.
Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative
Fabric, Hot Water, Salt or Vinegar, Spoon, Dish Soap, Gloves
Start with pre-washed fabric.
Wet fabric
Add a cup of salt if dyeing cotton, rayon or linen.
Add a cup of vinegar if dyeing nylon, silk or wool.
Since we are dyeing cotton, we used salt.
Stir.
Add a drop of liquid dish detergent.
Stir again.
Put on gloves.
Shake dye.
Pour dye into water.
For every pound of fabric, use 1/2 cup of dye with three gallons of the hottest water safe for fabric.
To achieve a darker color or more intense color, double the dye quantity.
Stir.
Use a paper towel or napkin to test the dye color.
Add fabric to the dye bath.
Stir for 10-30 minutes until desired color is achieved.
Use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing to enhance the color and reduce bleeding.
Add four tablespoons of ColorStay Dye Fixative to three gallons of hot water.
Stir.
Add dyed fabric to bath.
Stir occasionally for 20 minutes.
Remove fabric from the fixative dye bath and rinse in cold water until rinse water runs clear.
Wash in warm water with a mild detergent.
Rinse and dry.
